Current approaches
Three strategies — each with limits
Mechanical removal (daily)

Chemical neutralization
Zinc salts bind sulfur compounds to temporarily suppress odor. Oxygenating agents disrupt anaerobic bacteria. Both approaches mask or briefly reduce volatile sulphur compounds without removing the underlying biofilm.
Microbiome modulation
Oral probiotics such as Streptococcus salivarius K12 can reduce recolonization by odor-producing species over time. Promising long-term, but slow to act and dependent on consistent supplementation.
